2026-27 WIAA Sectional Realignment: Breaking Down the Key Shifts

The WIAA has released the sectional assignments for the 2026-27 season, and several significant moves will change the path to Madison for teams across the state. While there are updates in every corner of the map, a few specific divisional shifts stand out for their impact on the post-season landscape. In some cases, the sectional letter has changed but the group remains relatively the same. 

Division 1

The most notable change in Division 1 involves programs that have historically performed well in smaller divisions moving up to face the state's largest schools.   

St. Croix Falls: After finishing as a D2 state semifinalist last season, they have moved into Division 1. They are placed in Sectional A, which pairs them with Holmen, last year’s D1 runner-up.

Coleman: Following a runner-up finish in D2 last year—and a long history of success in D3—Coleman is now in Sectional B. Their consistent ability to produce high-level individual wrestlers will be tested against D1 depth.

Arrowhead & Waterford: Arrowhead moves back into Sectional E, a familiar spot for the program, while Waterford also rejoins the D1 ranks after a brief stint in D2.

Division 2

Division 2 sees the most movement this cycle, with several programs dropping down from D1 or moving up from D3, creating new matchups in almost every sectional.

Sectional B: St. Croix Central has been moved to Sectional B. This puts them in the same bracket as G.E.T./M/M. Given the recent trajectory of both programs, this looks to be one of the more competitive duals to decide a Team State representative.

Sectional C: This sectional will look entirely different this year due to three specific changes:
Luxemburg-Casco moves down from D1.
Ashwaubenon has also been moved into D2.
Weyauwega-Fremont moves up from D3.

Sectional D: Sheboygan South moves from D1 down to D2, finding their new place in Sectional D.

Sectional E: Sparta has moved from D1 to D2, landing in Sectional E. This sectional was already noted for its high concentration of ranked wrestlers last season, and the addition of a consistent program like Sparta adds further depth to the brackets.

Sectional F: Former D1 power Stoughton gets moved from Sectional E to Sectional F, which could unlock a state run for them this next year.

Division 3

Division 3 sees a few notable changes, particularly with established programs shifting down from Division 2.

Sectional A: Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm is a new addition to this bracket. Their presence adds a different look to the northwestern part of the state.
Sectional E: This sectional receives a significant boost in depth with both Dodgeville and River Valley moving down to D3.

Note on the WIAA Postings: If you’ve been looking at the initial WIAA documents, you’ll see Dodgeville listed as a co-op with Hustisford. We’ve confirmed with Mel Dow at the WIAA that this is a clerical error; the co-op is actually with Dodgeland. The WIAA is aware and will be updating the official paperwork soon.

Girls

This season marks a historic milestone for Wisconsin wrestling as the WIAA introduces the official Team State format for the girls. While individual excellence has been the focus for years, this shift puts a premium on roster depth and dual-meet strategy. All eyes will be on the sectional results to see which programs have the numbers and the talent to emerge as the first-ever girls' team state dual champions. It is a significant step forward for the sport, and seeing how coaches manage these new postseason dual lineups will be a major storyline throughout the post-season.

What did we miss?

These are the moves that jumped off the page to us, but with a state as deep as Wisconsin, there are always under-the-radar shifts that decide who gets to Madison.
